Michael Shayne Mystery Magazine, as it was originally called, first hit the newsstands in 1956.

It shared the racks with Manhunt, Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine and Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, to name a few of the most prominent mystery mags of the era (Hitchcock and Queen are still being published today). After six issues, it was renamed Mike Shayne Mystery Magazine, a title which lasted until the magazine ended its almost 30-year run with the August 1985 issue.

The monthly magazine featured a Mike Shayne novelette by Brett Halliday (this wasn't Davis Dresser, but could be one or more of many authors working under the pseudonym) as well as a number of short stories by prominent and not-so-well known mystery and crime writers of the day.

Hundreds of Mike Shayne stories graced its pages over the years, from short stories to novellas.
